today's experiment = disappointing. not extremely so but still disappointing. will have to wait to repeat it on sunday. at least the answer wasn't that my hypothesis was thrown out the window so there's still hope.
it's still so frustrating - i remember when i worked full time, my mentor used to say that the advice that in science, you get your kicks out of little successes. she was right.
beaten down but not defeated. i will rise again. hopefully sooner than later.

two of my straight med school guy friends on separate occasions (yes, i'm sure they're straight) told me about the h&m opening in pasadena. crazy, how the heck did they know... u know how big fashion news is, if straight medical guys know about it!
strangely, so tired these days. i should be energized after a great weekend but just wiped out. i've been on a korean cooking spree lately. so far it's been yummy, fun to be experimenting.
big experiment day tomorrow, trying to repeat an important result. my PI said he'd buy me a beer if this experiment repeats.

U.S. loosens airline security rules
Under the new rules, travelers may carry:
* Drinks and other items purchased in the secure areas of the airport.
* Travel-size toiletry containers of 3 ounces (90 ml) or less that are placed in a “quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag.” That includes items like lip gloss and hand lotion. The bags will be screened and returned if they are cleared.
of course this is one day after security had to go through my bags to search for what they swear was a glass bottle. they thought they had mistaken my stila mousse eye shadow which contains about 5 mls of solid cake in it but it took forever for them to decide. it is to the point of ridiculous-ness, and glad that they're changing their policies.

this is what progress looks like in my world - i got staining! it was a good day today, small steps taken towards graduation. i'm realizing more and more, how much luck is really involved in science. nothing that i did in particular, but different ways of approaching a problem - and you're lucky if you get a positive result.
post-quals life is good. my friends are telling me i look much happier than when i was in med school.
people can comment on my blog now! not sure if people tried before, but it works now.
fall is in the air! don't get sick, it seems like everyone around me is sick.

post test trip
i guess i always take a trip after a big test...? went to ko samui, thailand after step 1 of the boards, and then now to NY after my quals... of course, i had such a blast as always. i know that i blogged below that i wanted to take it easy - that seriously lasted one day. ;) i ended up seeing three shows! i didn't plan on it. the second day, i went to see hairspray, starring diana degarmo (of american idol) and haylie duff (of napoleon dynamite fame). i got to sit front row center - what a treat. diana degarmo was such a cute actress (who knew??), and i was so close to the stage i felt like i was in the show. after mojitos and thai food at highline, we saw martin short's new broadway one man show, called "fame becomes me". dame edna was SO much better, but it was still an entertaining show, mostly because larry king was in the audience! they pulled him up and martin short came out as jiminy glick to interview him. i think martin short's strength is in his improv - his segment as jiminy glick with larry king was the best part of the show.
my highlight of the night was running into the the history boys while walking to martin short's show. as my friend says, i definitely have a weakness for cute boys with british accents. ^^ that chance meeting was enough to convince me to buy rush tickets for a matinee performance the next day. i'm very glad i saw it - the history boys was really moving, thought provoking, shocking... i know it's not everyone's favorite but the fact that it left me intrigued, thought-provoked, and still having an impression on my mind, i think says something. it's hard to verbalize, but definitely intriguing and i find myself mulling over it now, in my mind. i feel like i need to see it again b/c i feel like i missed a lot the first time around.
overall, it was such a great trip - i wanted it to be relaxing after my quals and for me to try out some of the good restaurants and bars that i've been wanting to go to, without the pressure of having to make all the broadway lotteries. and we did, but as soon as i went to a broadway show, i realized how much i love doing that as well. theater definitely runs in my blood.
one surprising thing was that i saw a lot of celebrities - as mentioned below, i saw jim from "the office" (my cousins are SO extremely jealous!), jerry stiller, larry king, martin short, as well as bode miller (the winter olympic skiier) who was on my flight back home, flying to denver. oh and we also saw a contributor to the O magazine. hehe, as well as keith roberts. hanging out in NY is like playing where's waldo. oh so fun.
slowly getting back into the swing of things. an early victory in research with promising data - yay.

a big shout out to tk, momaxx, and mmonk for hanging out with us! you guys really made my trip a lot of fun, we'll definitely have to go to the speakeasy again sometime soon and have a bee's kiss or a moscow mule. or both.

speakeasy
survived one day in ny without being mugged! It was so ideal - exactly what i needed after my quals. this trip, i've decided, is going to be about food and drinks - not really about maniacally going to see broadway once to twice a day, everyday. of course i'll see one or two broadway shows ;) but it was nice going to ted allen (of queer eye for the straight guy)'s favorite restaurant in new york, malatesta, with their yummy handmade pasta and house cabernet. after a walk along the hudson river avoiding vioxx drug dealers and bears, and we had cocktails at the secretive speakeasy called "little branch", where we saw jim from "the office". he has the casual sexiness going for him. :) as i stood up to go to the bathroom, i looked back to see him and saw him staring right back at me. hehe. i fulfilled my celebrity fix for this ny trip thru him.
what a great way to unwind after the quals! time is already traveling fast, can't imagine going back to real life.

it's over!! wow i have a completely different outlook on life - everything seems so much sunnier. even got to run errands - what a luxury! :) going to relax for a bit and then head off to NY, here I come!
my tribute to steve irwin: wow i can't believe he's gone, i loved him. i remember watching him for the first time in the dorms at Stanford and just MESMERIZED by his excitement, passion, and his courage in getting so close to the animals.
