me: "i think i'm slowly going insane..."
j: "slowly?"
a chocotini with a side of trivia

i was planning on having a quick drink at a local watering hole for a chocotini, catching up with a friend, but it ended up so differently. at the door, we were told that we couldn't participate in trivia night because there were too many teams, which we shrugged. as we grabbed a drink and stood looking for tables, a group of four asked if we wanted to join their group for trivia night. i recognized one of them from gross anatomy (she is in charge of the body donation program, and made an appearance for the neuroanatomy class I'm TA-ing for) and apparently they all work together - in the morgue. two of them are forensic entomologists - they can tell the time of death of a person by looking at insect larvae on a cadaver. fascinating! anyways - apparently all the teams were mostly hard core trivia teams, and since it was my friend and i's first time there for trivia night, it was such a new experience. i didn't know anything about 80's music, sports, or the population density of singapore per square mile, but i guessed the first woman director to gross over $100 million (guess who? it was her), an answer worth three points. what i really contributed to was the category, "sex and the city". no one else on my team knew anything from SATC! Questions and answers:

  • which newspaper does carrie write for? and which day of the week is her column published? (i guess wednesday, and got it right ;)
  • to whom is carrie's book dedicated? (charlotte, and optimists everywhere)
  • how many abortions did samantha have? (i missed this one, and for a bonus point: what was the name of the guy that carrie got pregnant with, and had to have an abortion?)
  • when samantha wants a birkin bag and finds out that the waiting list is a few years long, whose name does she drop in order to get at the top of the waiting list? (i knew this answer as soon as they said "birkin bag": lucy liu)

and we won first place! :) the first place prize was $50 gift certificate.

such a random night. the chocotini was good. ;)

my crazy weekend is extended til tonight - was b's bachelorette party this past weekend! i think i need to go into hiding for a few days and sleep and do nothing, i can't seem to be able to do it at home.

so dark the con of man

da vinci code got bad reviews at the cannes film festival!

"One especially melodramatic line uttered by Hanks drew prolonged laughter and some catcalls, and the audience continued to titter for much of the film’s remainder."

ouch. it still looks exciting, altho I was a bit disappointed they made fairly big changes to the book - like teabing is married and he lost the use of his legs not through polio, but through another reason, as ian mckellan said in an interview.

lazy sort of summer evening - definitely in need of a night at home, after a few nights out.(it's never quite for studying ever, is it? :) been in the mood for women songwriters lately - fiona apple, india arie, nelly furtado (who, by the way, is coming out with a new cd in june).

from the words of fiona apple:

If you don't have a song
To sing you're okay
You know how to get along
Humming
Hmmm

If you don't have a date
Celebrate
Go out and sit on the lawn
And do nothing
'Cause it's just what you must do
Nobody does it anymore

No I don't believe in the wasting of time,
But I don't believe that I'm wasting mine

If you don't have a point to make
Don't sweat it
You'll make a sharp one being so kind
And I'd sure appreciate it
Everyone else's goal's to get big headed
Why should I follow that beat being that I'm
Better than fine

grey's anatomy... and broadway??

what does a medical tv drama that takes place in seattle have anything to do with broadway? grey's anatomy is really attracting a lot of broadway stars to its ranks on tv. it's a good way for broadway people to get tv exposure, i suppose. some smaller broadway players got roles as main characters, but some bigger broadway names are getting smaller roles on grey's anatomy - like sara ramirez, who won the tony for her role in spamalot who plays george's busty orthopaedic surgeon girlfriend, and now, my favorite, michael arden! he plays a funny character not too much unlike himself. ;) watching him interact with sandra oh is hilarious.
finally finished the da vinci code! i only let myself read it during the day (so eerie) so it limited my reading time. what a great story.

my life can continue...

weallhaveaids.org . Click on the picture to enlarge. David Baltimore on the top row, fourth from the right, above and between Elizabeth Taylor and Alicia Keyes.

i was waiting in the bart station at the civic center, in my final performance of the sf ballet (i'm so sad they're over with their season!) when i saw my old boss's face staring back at me. wow! amazing - hidden among all these stars was my old PI, david baltimore. unfortunately, he doesn't do a lot of basic science research in HIV now after his initial Nobel-worthy discovery of reverse transcriptase (his lab does more cancer, neuroscience, and cell signaling - although at lab, there was a room called the HIV room where a lot of the work used to take place) but he's still active in speaking before Congress, etc.

he was a really nice guy - he gave me a raise. ^^ i remember him inviting us over to his house (or Caltech's house, reserved for their president) and him joining us for a dip in the pool. he has a really cute dog too.
