My name analysis~
"The name of Jolene gives you a clever, quick, analytical mind, but you suffer with a great deal of self-consciousness, lack of confidence, and much aloneness because of misunderstandings. Your idealistic and sensitive nature gives you a deep appreciation for the finer things of life and a strong desire to be of service to humanity. There are times when you experience inner turbulence at your inability to say what you mean. It is far easier for you to express your deeper thoughts and feelings through writing than verbally. You find pleasure in literature, in poetry, and in your ideals and will turn to them when you feel you have been misunderstood. You are deeply moved by the beauties of life, especially nature."

frighteningly true. Jen's came out pretty true too, altho Sarah's was a little off. you can check your own name, here.

jen might be on oprah today! a few months ago, she went with a friend to serendipity and saw cameras around there, and one cameraman told her to say "hi" into the camera. after that, she looked around and saw OPRAH sitting in the corner, with some other people... apparently oprah looked at jen briefly :) but she looked too busy for jen to bug her.

how fun!! i hope jen comes out. :) so watch it if you get a chance, everyone~

the three amigos back together again! my SD trip was great~ i had such a good time, can't believe the four days went by so fast. this pic was taken at hash house - one of our favorites in San Diego, specifically in Hillcrest, which is my favorite neighborhood in SD. look at what we're eating! liz cheated and had a head start.  Posted by Hello

SFN

I'm at the SFN neuroscience conference! I'm having such a blast, San Diego is such a beautiful city, I missed it a lot. Things have been SO crazy in the past few days - on top of being sick and everything seeming a bit hazy... but time at the conference flies by SO fast, just learning a lot about inhibitory synapse formation and neurogenomics... seymour benzer is awesome. :P he admits he googles himself! so funny, his wife used to work in my old lab at caltech, she was quirky but really nice.

clubbing is crazy here in SD, with the addition of 30,000+ neuroscientists! People definitely have a different "look" and feel than the normal SD crowd. It's fun though - most guys are unembarrassingly bold on the dance floor - maybe they have nothing to lose? It's better than pretending to be too cool, I suppose.

on the menu today: autism (everything from EEGs to abnormalities in neural development, yay! don't know that much about it, but a possible future research interest), neurogenomics, and neurodegeneration (ALS, Huntington's). Oh, and dinner at phil's bbq, winner of the national bbq sauce or something like that. YUM! oh, and maybe a late night drink at thin.

no room for hematology or met reg. :P ah well.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dad!

dad: 55
dad: like a speed limit
."
times when jen and i were less expensive and much easier to entertain. ah, the good old days... Posted by Hello

the luckiest guy in the world, even tho i say so myself... ;)
"...paralysis is the ultimate excuse for bad behavior" -Margaret Cho

(ok that previous quote was taken out of context, but I was kind of struck by it.) Been feeling a little out-of-myself lately. i'm having a hard time being dependent on others, i guess crutches can do that to you. one good thing - i'll have buff arms. :D hopefully not too many blisters. i don't know how people with chronic debilitating diseases do it; it must be really really tough. thank God for awesome friends - I could never have done it without them.

if i don't show up to opthalmology class this thursday, do you think anyone will notice? :P one good thing today - we got out of class an hour early! that was awesome, one more hour to study for our virology midterm on thursday.

or one more hour to watch tv. :D

my parents just came back from europe... pics are beautiful. it reminds me of this one "disorder" (there was actually a name for it) that some people experience when going to europe, where when you're surrounded by such beauty, you go through physiological symptoms. interesting!

Chief complaint: painful ankle
Physical exam: on the superomedial aspect of the lateral malleolus, a hard edematous and red and warm nodule the size of a small avocado.

i haven't sprained my ankle in such a long time, and it's never been this swollen... even in my ballet days, I don't remember it being this bad. argh, I hate staying at home and doing nothing... the only position that's comfortable keeping my foot elevated, is when i'm lying down on my sofa with my foot on the arm rest, watching tv. :P I can't even study with my foot elevated! ;)

i had a good preceptorship at the hospital today. the last time i went, the nurse wasn't expecting me, and kept on asking when I was leaving. so my expectations were low, and i was surprised. i heard my first heart murmur today, and my preceptorship brought me to a "mystery" patient where she had me guess what the patient had. and i guessed correctly! :) hehe. She had jaundice (okok, it wasn't too hard, but still, if you're under pressure and if you've never seen jaundice before...) and looked like an image when the color balance on my tv is off. Even inside of her mouth was yellowish.

Hear a heart murmur here.

so i'm giving myself a break today. actually, a break from regular studying and writing up my H&P. I forgot to do vitals, whoops, what do I do?? make them up? :P heh heh. JK. I felt so bad, examining the patient, when he was so sick... 89 years old, fairly good health, such an upbeat guy, and very patient with my poking and prodding, having him lay down and sit back up, having him take off his sweater even though he was cold... so that's my excuse for not having taken my vitals. :P

apprentice is on tonight! quickly becoming my favorite show... i want to see the guys argue this week. why is it always just the girls.

someone mentioned that my hometown on my friendster account differed from my twin sister's. hm. interesting. i've moved around so much, what is your "hometown"? jen put down where we were born, or the area (SF) and i put where we went to high school - when people ask me where I'm from, I usually say I'm from LA, or where I was most of my high school years. Probably b/c that is when i started forming my identity and social network, so i stand by that proclamation.

monday tomorrow. boo. it's going to be a busy week.

so cute! Avenue Q puppets did a spoof on the kerry and bush debate, in a public show called Avenue Q and A.

"Avenue Q resident Mrs. Thistletwat (Aymee Garcia) posed a question about the state of marriage, to which Bush responded, closing with "Heterosexuals have done such a wonderful job with marriage, I don't know why we'd let those homosexuals screw it up." Kerry then rebutted, asking the incumbent "Weren't you a cheerleader at Yale?" The Democrat and Republican then went back and forth in song to the show's familiar melody:

Kerry: If you were gay
that'd be okay.
The USA
would like you anyway
cause George, you see
if it were me
I would feel free to say
that I was gay
(But I'm not gay)

Bush: But Senator Kerry, you voted against gay marriage.

Kerry: Can't a guy change his mind?
If you were queer,
I wouldn't smear.
Despite the fact that we're…
…in an election year.
But you'd be glad
and run a negative ad,
if I told you today
"Guess what? I'm gay!"
(But I'm not gay.) I'm happy
just being with you…

Bush: Let's talk about Saddam Hussein.

Kerry: So what should it matter to me
what you like to do with Dick?

Bush: You mean Dick Cheney?

Kerry: If you want to!!
If you were gay,
I'd shout "Hooray!"

Bush: I'm not listening!

Kerry: While you sashay...

Bush: Laura!!!

Kerry:...round the office like Beyonce!
You should feel free
to tell the G.O.P.
That instead of Laura Bush
you want some young guy's tush,
then you could proudly say,
"Hey,
I'm sexier than JFK,
and I'm gay!"

Bush: I'm not gay!!!!

Kerry: If you WERE gay.
"

fall is definitely in the air - it gets chilly at night and in the mornings, it's slowly making it harder to get up. i like it though; it's nice to leave the windows open and not feel like a heater is blowing full blast in your face.

sipping coffee... waiting to use up my Costco coffee I drink now so I can start drinking D&D coffee that I got in NY. I MISS NY... altho I do like driving. I think the two downsides of NY are: not having a car, and the weather.

What a perfect morning - a bright colored sweater pulled over my pj's, an empty weekday morning with no classes, some time for introspection.

on my mind:

in my extreme sensitivity and self consciousness, which have revealed aspects of my personality that I've never liked, I've decided to try to embrace my weaknesses. Despite others' disapproval, I like the idea of being emotional (perhaps not the actuality of it) - fully experiencing life's events, and not suppressing any of it (like when my mom tells me that a lady doesn't laugh like I do). Live life fully! (Himal's ghost voice: 'what does that mean?')

reminds me of what I read on jason mraz's journal today:

"'Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting...holy expletive...what a ride!' and that about sums up why I take so many vitamins and do what I do, sometimes not taking it as seriously as I should. I enjoy the sideways skid and correcting the position at the last possible minute to make whatever, happen, as it should. The overall outlook should forever remain care free and spontaneous so that these days off sneak up on us and feel like pleasant rewards. It’s a holiday. Celebrate. I’m sure the view from wherever you are is as gorgeous as mine, whether sideways or in line. Just turn your head the opposite if you can’t see it. Even for only a second. "

for me, if that includes fully experiencing my emotions, then so be it.

"I am with you; that is all you need. My power shows up best in weak people" -2 Corinthians 12:9a

I should stop watching as much tv as I do to... I try! Or at least watch it with a friend, or more like we did on Wed with the Apprentice. The Apprentice is always better watched with more people, commenting, getting excited together. ^^
